Dial in your landing spots and avoid those unexpected flyers (or plug-and-stops) with our Carry-vs-Roll Distance Estimator. Enter your typical carry, pick the club, and choose the turf firmness to instantly see the forward bounce, additional rollout, and total distance you can expect.
Why Carry-vs-Roll Matters
Landing the ball in the right spot is only half the puzzle—you also need to know how far it will scoot, hop, or stop after touching down. Factoring in rollout lets you:
- Avoid hazards in front of greens or fairway bunkers.
- Pick safer landing zones when conditions get firm.
- Stick wedges close when the turf is soft and receptive.
What the Estimator Shows
| Output Field | What It Tells You | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| First-Bounce Forward Distance | The initial hop / skid forward once the ball lands. | B = Carry × b_T |
| Additional Rollout Distance | How much farther the ball rolls after the first bounce. | R = Carry × (r_C × f_T) − B |
| Total Distance | Carry + all forward movement after landing. | D = Carry + B + R |

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Enter your carry distance – Use launch monitor data or on-course pacing.
- Select your club – The estimator applies a club-specific roll ratio.
- Choose turf firmness – Visual inspection or course notation (soft, medium, hard).
- Read the results:
- First-Bounce shows the initial hop/skid distance.
- Additional Rollout shows how much farther it runs after that.
- Total Distance gives end-to-end yardage.
- (Optional) Hit Reset to clear and start again.
Practical Example
Scenario
- 7-Iron carry: 160 yd
- Hard, running fairways after a dry spell
Results
- First bounce:
160 × 0.10 = 16 yd- Additional rollout:
160 × (0.12 × 1.4) − 16 = 10.9 yd- Total distance:
160 + 16 + 10.9 ≈ 187 yd
Tips for On-Course Use
- Observe pitch marks – Deep divots = soft; almost none = hard.
- Use range-finder “plays like” yardage as a cross-check on windy days.
- Update carry numbers when temperatures change significantly.
- Err short to front pins on firm greens—the tool will show how much release to expect.
Limitations
- Roll ratios are averages; extreme launch conditions (very high or low spin, flighted shots) will differ.
- Does not account for slopes, wind, or rough. Applies to fairway-height turf on flat ground.
- Firmness multipliers assume dry conditions; saturated turf can reduce rollout even when “hard.”
